RakuOS is a Hybrid Atomic Linux distribution built on Fedora — combining the security and reliability of an immutable base with the full package flexibility of a traditional distro.
The base system is always read-only and recoverable. Fast OCI-based updates via bootc mean a bad update never breaks your system — just reboot into the previous image. But unlike other atomic distros, RakuOS doesn't stop there.
A persistent overlay system lets you install any native package using dnf, the GUI app store, or the rakuos helper — and those packages survive every system update automatically. No rpm-ostree layering. No reinstalling after upgrades. No compromises.
Ships with the CachyOS performance kernel and SCX scheduler GUI for best-in-class gaming and workload performance. Steam, Lutris, and Heroic Launcher install natively for maximum Proton and Wine compatibility. Flatpak is available alongside native packages — your choice, not ours.
Available in KDE Plasma (flagship), GNOME, and COSMIC

  • Congratulations on a very smooth implementation of an attractive concept. I had no problem with installation on a VM and the switch to the "testing" Fedora 44 image was easy using the RakuOS software app. As a user of my own custom Kinoite image, RakuOS solves a lot of the typical user frustration with not being able to install packages. I understand the future "to do" list includes development of a template users could use to build their own custom image. That would appeal to me as my preference would be to use the nightly Rawhide image (as I do in my custom Kinoite image). I wish this project a lot of success and will be following it with interest (and will throw on a spare laptop in the meantime).

Thanks for the Kind words! a Raw Hide branch sounds like a good idea tbh as then RakuOS could then have testing for the next two versions out from "stable". something I will work on getting a good setup going. then RakuOS could go from testing Raw Hide->Staging and then all that ends up in main(stable) at the end. The template repo though will be coming this coming week or so.
  • Good, easy install, clean install, not filled with filler apps. Based on FEDORA 43 ... Uses DNF . Very good choices. Also it uses CachyOS kernel .. Speedy and Snappy. Im not sure what else is much different from Fedora but the Cachyos Kernel is a nice start ... This is great for people who want am easy fedora 43 install with a fast Kernel pre installed. Itll be interesting to see where this project goes. Why it will stand out.. We shall see ..

Thanks for the kind words! Plan is to integrate Flatpak into the system as much as possible as if they were native. Already have it where when apps are installed it creates wrappers in /usr/local/bin so say for instance you install steam.. steam can be ran with just a "steam" command, which for steam thats useful because the .desktops all have steam as the command even for the flatpak. Atm I am working on a sane flatpak override service to set up common permissions and such out the box, theme integration and fixes for various flatpaks out the box. so people aren't spending all day setting up their apps . As IMO there are some pain points with some flatpaks out the box
